Requests for Information / Design Issue Recommendation / Resolution

PH&C logs field questions, gets a design answer, and prices the cost and time before the crew changes the work.

A request for information, or RFI, is how a contractor asks the design team what the drawings mean. PH&C runs that log for the owner so questions are answered quickly and the cost of each answer is known before work changes.

What PH&C handles

  • Receiving, numbering, and dating every RFI.
  • Sending each question to the right designer and tracking the response time.
  • Reviewing responses for cost and schedule effect before they are implemented.
  • Separating design clarifications from changes in scope.
  • Identifying patterns, such as many RFIs on one specification section, and raising them with the design team.
  • Coordinating bulletins and revised drawings when an answer changes the documents.
  • Linking RFIs to change orders and to the pay application record.
  • Reporting open items to the owner.

What you get

  • A single log that shows each question, the response, and the outcome.
  • Decisions made before the field has to guess.
  • Fewer unplanned changes after work is in place.
  • A record that supports your position if a claim arises.

How it connects

The RFI process works with construction coordination and supervision and with contract and budget management, where the cost of each answer is tracked. It is part of construction management. If your RFI list is a spreadsheet no one owns, send it to PH&C.
